EDEN OPEN SOURCE

an interactive performative installation exploring the topic of shame.

The multisense, immersive, synesthetic installation is mixing documentary fieldwork, textile art, performing arts (choreography and interactive audio play) and creative coding.

EDEN OPEN SOURCE creation process took over a year. I spent it meeting with people who were willing to donate pieces of their shame to the project. Being a sensitive ear, registering words, breaths, touches, microtensions and gestures, I woven an intimate map of shame for each of these persons. I later embedded each of the maps into an interactive programmed fabric. Garments with incorporated audio materials were made of these fabrics and became avatars of shame for each of the contributors.

A visitor to the installation space can try the garments on and connect their headphones to them. They are invited to reveal layers of the shame histories by filling the objects with movement, exploring their textures, folds, nooks and crannies, thereby triggering complex audio algorithms. Everyone can experience the garments with their own approach, curiosity and ways of listening, by experimenting with their unique expression, the manner they touch and sometimes by applying some patience.

PROCESS:

The installation documents shame (hi)stories of five people. The first step in the process of creating EDEN OPEN SOURCE consisted of private meetings and conversations/workshops with them. I used various techniques and exercises to capture (and/or register) their touch, gestures and micro-tensions. We worked with different types of memory (verbal and non-verbal ones). An essential part of the process involved working with interoception and and deeply engaging other senses, such as touch and proprioception. We were continuously extending and transforming sensations and memories into handmade fabrics, gradually developing a unique technique for each aspect of shame and each person. Meetings proceeded gently and unhurriedly. Starting at the surface, we slowly dived in deeper and deeper.

Writing was a parallel stage. For each person, I composed a set of 4 to 6 texts in which I gently attempted to lift the veil of their shame. Each person involved had continuous access to their story and was free to modify or edit the text to preserve their sense of safety and anonymity. We focused on the tension between the verbal and non-verbal aspects of shame, and on their complex dynamics.

Once the texts were completed and approved by each person, I moved on to producing audio materials in cooperation with a music and audio spaces composer and five voice performers (chosen according to the guidelines provided by the individuals I worked with, and the fantasies about how their shame should be avatarized).

Simultaneously, from the very beginning of the process, I had been working on integrating all these elements: fabrics, sounds, sensations, fantasies, memories, and more. I was sewing the garments, designing, and prototyping the electronics and software (dynamic algorithms unique to each piece of shame).

Finally, for each person, I created an interactive, multisensory piece of clothing to act as an avatar of their shame. All the fabrics were handmade (bodymade) with the person's expressions sewn into them. They serve as a tangible extension of the process of listening and co-being. This is where I also placed what lingers at the threshold of silence.

In preparation for setting up the space for the installation I also created meditation tracks that serve as a meta narrative. They increase in musical complexity as more visitors listen to them simultaneously. Vocals (performed by the same persons who lent their voices to the avatars) recite stories about evolution perceived as a chain of accidental encounters - such as those encounters across differences that the installation is designed to trigger. The meditation blends the language of science (microbiology, especially holobiont theory) and poetry.

INSTALLATION:

Entering the installation space, you will see the garments on metal hangers. Each piece of clothing is equipped with an audio jack port, where you can plug your own headset or one available on site. The entire installation as well the surrounding space are available for you to freely interact with. You can put the garments on, touch them as they are placed on the hangers, put them on your lap while sitting comfortably in a shared space or take them to a dedicated space for a more private experience. How you attempt to interact, listen, communicate with the avatars is entirely up to you. Whether an avatar reveals its story and how many pieces and layers of it are unveiled, depends on how it is being interacted with and for how long. Some avatars encourage interaction, others seem to avoid it. You are encouraged to discover means of engaging with the object, to embody it physically and to connect with the (hi)stories embedded within it. You can interact with the various components of the object — manipulating buttons, zipping and unzipping, exploring pockets, seeking out movements or poses that evoke different sensations, examining (dis)comfort, exploring ways of touching, and other methods of sharing time space and body with an avatar.  Some interactions are intuitive, others quite the opposite. Whatever works for one avatar might not trigger any response from another. Everything depends on the underlying (hi)story.

Each avatar is both way interface, you can not only experience avatar but leave your response. Each piece of clothing contains a QR code tag. By scanning it with a smartphone, you will access the avatar’s website. It contains a contact form to send a kind word to the person behind the avatar. Additionally the website contains audio transcriptions to accommodate all those who prefer the written form.

The installation space has a set of comfy sitting spots where you can rest, familiarize yourself with the surroundings and listen to the meditation audio material - the meta-narrative for the installation.
